A beautifully written graphic novel with visually stunning illustrations paired with it. Squire is a story about the horrors of war, colonialism, and identity. As readers, we can see the effect that the use of language, propaganda, and power can work to maintain systematic oppression — in this way, Aiza does not recognise that fighting for the empire means to contribute that oppression to her people.

I only wished for there to be more — I know there can be limits when writing and illustrating a graphic novel but I don’t think there was enough build up for the climax to be properly executed, making the empire’s “reveal” minimised the long term impact it has caused.

Although there could be more added, Squire is a graphic novel is definitely worth reading.
