I know this is officially labeled as fantasy, but I'm struggling to remember any magical elements - it's pretty straightforward action with a military setting. I appreciate the story for what it tries to do, but it's something that's been done a million times, and better. The characters are pretty flat and I wish that they didn't fall into the kingdom/hierarchical stereotypes that we see over and over again.

Highly recommend reading Squire. Since the author focuses heavily on deconstructing genre tropes and imperial narratives, the story and themes feel very familiar and easy to digest while still being unique and well developed. It reminds me of something you'd read in high school in a literature course. I really enjoyed the cast and thought that they were all well developed. I think I give it 4 stars instead of 5 only because the script was simple. I'm struggling to find the right way to describe it, but learning that the author is known for writing Marvel comics made the style more recognizable. I am however an adult reading a YA graphic novel, so I don't really think so can rightfully call this an actual deficit, just not a 5-star according to my tastes.
There are also a lot of moments or pieces of the story that feel very self indulgent to the author and illustrator, and I really enjoyed that. It makes Squire feel like a story only this team could've made. Which I suppose is true for a lot of art, but still. For example, the illustrator describes using a lot of reference photos and coloring methods either directly from, or reminiscent of, her family's home in Jordan. I found that it gave a lot of the settings that familiar affection of a place you've grown up, even if the setting itself is unfamiliar to me.
