The ending is a bit open-ended - uncertain on whether the future is optimistic or bleak - but it remains hopeful and satisfying seeing Aiza and her friends mature and realize the role they partake as pawns in a colonial system. Major themes being the cycle of violence that fuels and maintains colonialism, Squire by Nadia Shammas is a must-read for youth and adults alike.

This! Was! So! Good!!!!
Written and illustrated by two Jordanian-American and Palestinian- Americans. The illustration style is so neat!

This is about a young girl, Aiza. She and her people are considered second class citizens in the town they live in- her dream is to become a knight serving the empire that hates them. But to even get in, she must hide all signs of her culture or else risk facing distrust, hatred and even violence from those she would befriend.

Its a story about colonialism, racism and coming to terms with the lies our history books tell. And telling said empire to go fuck itself!

There are a lot of parallels to Palestine and IsnotReal and the US, and what they have been doing for decades in the Middle East, while telling the world they are the good guys.

I loved this so much. The pacing is excellent and its humor is brilliant and perfectly done alongside the heavy topic and themes. Highly highly reccomend.

If large chunks of text in graphic novels bothers you, this will be a good one for you- I feel like the authors do a great job of telling the story with a good balance of art to text and it's not overwhelming or dense.
