I really loved this graphic novel. It had everything from girls with swords to discussions of oppressed and oppressors. The reason it is 4 stars though is because of the continuity errors. Somethings were repeated over and over again, whereas some where literally just thrown in there that had no explanation at all.

An interesting comic that deals with prejudice and racism, war, and the subjectivity of the stories we tell and claim as objective "history".
12+ Violence, training, raids & ambushes, war?(lowkey that's what they were prepping for) Racist storyline and language.
This book had a lot of potential but fell very flat in the end. I found the characters were likable, and the training montages reminded me of the "I'll make a man out of you" scene in Mulan. The illustrations of course are absolutely gorgeous and I love it when authors/illustrators put the initial sketches/ideas in the back of their books). Unfortunately, I just found a lot of it to be rather predictable and boring in the end. I wasn't given enough to actually care about the characters, world-building, or storyline to wonder about the next book or rate it any higher.

really wonderful read. beautifully drawn, powerful message on cycles of violence. great combo of small scrappy girl + beefy brusque mentor man. gets me every time.
