I liked the setting and the art style. I'm always down for anti-military/anti-colonialism critique (as well was black and brown folks being portrayed as something other than savages in a fantasy setting!!!). I just think it was too short - I would have preferred for the characters to be a bit more fleshed out and to watch everyone's brainwashing unravel more gradually. I still think this is a fantastic way to introduce younger audiences to colonisation and apartheid through literature - I think I'm going to bump up my rating based on this alone.

This was more of a 4 but I want to support so rounded up. I dont read a ton of graphic novels (like one a year) but I'm glad that this year it was this one. A Little YA but Strong female characters, found family, standing up against governments etc. Super fun and BEAUTIFUL read. Kind of like the Poppy War but waaaaaay way way watered down and safe.

A nice, easy read, finished this in a day. The art style is really beautiful, the character design is delightful. A lot of the characters weren't fleshed out, and so their motivations didn't really make sense, and the action happens too abruptly, but I still think this is a fantastic way to introduce younger audiences to colonization and apartheid through literature. Will be adding this to our school reading recommendations the next year.

I love when graphic novels are fully fleshed out! This had strong themes of immigration, colonialism and empire.
