For years I only read mysteries on audiobook. I just couldn't stand the suspense any other way. One of my favorite audio mystery writers was Simon Brett. I liked his style, the settings and the fact that the mysteries were not too bloody.

This is one of Brett's more recent crime novels. It was fun, but it didn't live up to my memories of his other series.

I liked this book much better than anything I've read by Brett so far.

Not my favourite of the series and took me longer to read than these usually so. But I’ll still read the next one. Because of course I will.

I'm really enjoying the growing friendship between Jude and Carole, and seeing how all the changes in Carole's life are affecting her.

I liked this one more than usual for some reason. It wasn't the challenge of the plot - the identity of some of the mystery characters was a little more transparent than one usually looks for in a mystery, but despite anticipating the ending, the denouement went differently than I expected, and certainly not in what had started to be a pattern for Brett.
I still like the pairing of Jude and Carol. I don't know why people are so down on the latter. Sure, she's uptight and insecure, but those are flaws that make her even more human to me. Maybe it's because I had a British grandmother or maybe it's because Jude likes her, but I like Carol as much as I like Jude. Maybe as a sometime introvert and person with insecurities, I see very easily how Carol has things in common with me and other insecure introverts.
