“The borders imposed between things here are many. One must pay attention to them, and navigate them, which ultimately protects everyone from perilous consequences.”
There are two stories told in two timelines. One describes every detail of a soldiers life, including both boring as well as horrendous tasks. The other describes the research of these very details many years later. Shibli crafts a story using many symbols. And the second storyline reflects these symbols like a contorted mirror, promoting a tense atmosphere. This small book hits quite hard while being beautifully crafted.
There is something I asked myself while reading: Do we find the truest things in minor details, because at that moment we disregard its relations? Once we talk about relationships, we are talking about multiple points of view: there are only so many details our minds can grasp. So ultimately, in minor details, we find some hard facts to our (often simplified) truths. I recommend reading this. Both, for its perspective and its fascinating structure.
