Nope. Can't do it. If I have to read the phrase "meat candy" and have it mean bacon one more time, I'm going to light these characters on fire.

The summary made this story seem intriguing. The execution took a flying leap off a cliff and died a fiery death before it got started. These two characters are supposed to be grown-ass adults, yet they acted more like stupid teenagers.

Olivia was a giant idiot. I'm surprised she was able to figure out how to dress herself without a maid when she didn't know what a can opener was. Or that sheep do not sound like snarling wolves. Or that she wanted to make out with a door (with tongue because of course) but she wouldn't because that would mean splinters. And her whole "I'm in Hell, oh wait, I've just been kidnapped and the kidnapper is going to lay meat candy (meaning bacon) all over his body and make me eat it off him because that's how he gets his jollies. But I'll do it because it's meat candy (again, bacon) but I won't let him get satisfaction out of it!" Or the fact that her father supposedly made sure all his children were trained by black belt martial artists and knew how to take care of themselves yet she had the survival skills of wet cement.

Carter had potential, I'll admit. He was definitely sheltered/a little naïve and I do wonder if the things his dad told him were true or if there were other things being hidden.

Do yourself a favor and don't give this a chance. Even free, it's not worth it.

Mediocre

The MC had a distinct Unabomber feel for a while, I liked the surprise twist ending but overall its average with decent smut

I make an effort to mainly post positive reviews but I’m at a loss here because this is one of the worst books I’ve read in my life yet it’s extremely popular so this is more venting than review, to be honest. Let’s start with the fact that I’ve never encountered a more unattractive MC than Carter. The description isn’t all that attractive to begin with but when things start to heat up, we learn that his sexual preferences are unusual and women never want a second time with him. Say what now? That’s probably the most disturbing thing I’ve ever read in a romance novel because it’s treated like that’s no big deal. That would be fine if this was some niche kink erotica but this is supposed to be contemporary romance so a man that disgusts and/or horrifies the women willing to sleep with him is not wanted here.

Olivia wasn’t much better because she’s sheltered and clueless, but not in a cute way where you want to see him support her as she blossoms, she’s pretty pathetic. I stuck it out, hoping things would improve because I hate to quit a book but it actually got worse, not better. There’s all kinds of stuff happening but it’s kind of background noise in that we’re not given enough context to care so it’s distracting. The dialogue is stilted and not at all realistic, which is impossible for me to get past. I was hoping this was the beginning of a fun series but there’s no reason to try another book in this series. I’d like to say I’ll give the author’s other work a chance but only if someone I trust recommends one of her books.

i’ve gotten whiplash reading romance novels, esp dual pov ones but…wow. i still have a headache. steamy for sure but i didn’t particularly like olivia or carter. and some of the writing just…wasn’t great. but i had low expectations. would have loved this as a political thriller w romance i think.
