Jfc. Good book but I probably won’t be reading it anytime soon and my mental wellbeing was affected after reading it.

as much i love the idea of a complex character, this one is way too far—the misogyny and the level of self-destructive. the writing is good, though.

i don’t really know how to judge this book. the first thing that comes to mind is that it is strange and bleak. maybe the author’s best attempt at explaining how he viewed and existed in the world, hopefully with some exaggeration at points.

some interesting points were raised about living on the outskirts of society and how some individuals use society to justify exclusion. equally though, any time a women was mentioned there was an undertone of misogyny and sometimes what I read as hatred, so i definitely felt some unease.

considering this book is described as semi-autobiographical i really don’t think understanding it is possible but it’s definitely interesting in a morbid kind of way.

3.5/5 ???

lots of really dark things in this book. at first i really didn’t find it interesting at all - as a girl who is talkative and never really struggled finding people who are on the same silly juice i’m on, i found it hard to relate to the main character.

it picked up at the end tho for me, asked some real questions on sin, crime, redemption, relation, rejection. i do love a moody book that makes me question something big. i feel uneasy after reading this book, of course because of its dark nature, but also i’m just left swimming in questions? i’m taking it as a good sign that i feel uneasy - it means it’s changed some part of my worldview, even if only by a fraction. i feel id need to read this book another time to really understand its message. lucky the book is very short !

I understand why this book is considered a classic. It’s written (and translated) in a very captivating way. You feel the characters.

it is simply the beautiful struggle to be human, to fit in, to understand, the all encompassing difficulties of depression and putting on a normal face, finding small things that make you happy only to lose them, and life wears on you - but you can still be good to others, an angel even, without knowing it
