Finally read this after downloading it for a book club back when I was a sophomore lol… I was very critical of this book then and I still am but I think parts of what I disliked about Yozo were things I disliked about myself in regards to feeling like I don’t fit in or that I have to hide parts of myself to be liked. Reading it now, I have a bit more kindness to myself and am a bit more sympathetic towards him in the first notebook. However, that’s like where my sympathy ends. I hate it when books have a socially awkward male mc who becomes a misogynist because he feels slighted by society. I think there is an interesting question of what it means to be considered human but Yozo’s hypocrisy is so frustrating. It makes me wonder if Dazai also doesn’t view women as people…

Kinyas ve kayra’yı sevenlerin bayılacağı bir kitap. Yani benim nefret edeceğim ve edip yarıda bıraktığım bir kitap……….

this books is my first Dazai read. i would definitely like to read more, but i will say that the content and focus of this book seemed.... underwhelming. it is a take on aspects of what makes us truly human and the ways in which we fall short. except it felt like a Man (capital M on purpose) lamenting about how "hard" his life is by ruining the lives of others and ultimately taking no accountability by blaming his melancholic disposition. AND THEN other ppl make excuses for him. okay.
all that to say, if the MC was truly horrendous and leaned into his non-human status, I would have almost preferred it to this whiny baby narrative. the writing was good tho, hence the rating.

I'm writing this review while substitute teaching, this is just me typing my feelings haha
I, like a few others, picked up this book because of a certain anime containing characters based on deceased literary figures. I'm very glad I did, this book was a good read! (Ignoring the typos in the edition I own.) If I were to rate this book on how much I liked the main character, Yozo Oba, I would give this book -8 stars. However, if I were to rate this book on how quickly I breezed through it, I would give it 4 stars. I wonder which rating I ended up going with.
This book was a great read (obviously -- it's a classic for a reason).
I'm getting off track. I'm not here to ramble about the moralities of this book, that'd be pointless.
I thought it was a very interesting decision to have the man -- once a boy victimized by female AND MALE servants -- who hates women marry a girl who so embodies the ideal woman: virgin, pure, trusting, naive.
But this book ROCKS, I really enjoyed reading it

The misogyny of the mc was overwhelming, so honestly? Get disliked, idiot. Him being a survivor of child sexual assault -- as well as ADULT sexual assault -- and thinking that child molesters are the lowest of the low, and then not even remotely caring that his wife was being raped was a tough pill to swallow. His wife whom he had met when she was 17, nonetheless. While she wouldn't have really been viewed as a child back then with regards to that period's age of consent in Japan, she sure is seen as one now. Especially since they got married! And then-I'm getting off track. I'm not here to ramble about the moralities of this book, that'd be pointless.
