 I could sum up my reading as an immense desire to hug Yōzō and, at the same time, give him a telling-off to get him to react. 

But the truth is that on many occasions I have been able to see myself in Yōzō, and in that mirror I have realised many things I did not know.

An interesting snapshot of Tokyo around 1930. A truly disheartening snapshot of a life disturbingly wasted for no reason other than a negative personal identity and world view. This, along with the handful of other books I have read by Japanese authors, portrays a society in which most members are truly isolated as a cultural norm.

上手く人間生活ができない人のお話し。

程よく適当に生きられないあまりに、罪には罪を重ねて更に自分の首を絞めているように感じる。

今の時代の観点で見ると、おそらく何かしらの形で心を病んでいるので、他に何か対処法があれば助かったのではないかと思ってしまう。それと同時にこんなふうに生きにくい思いをしたまま放ったらかしにされるのは社会の闇なような気がするが、今も本質的には変わっていないのだろうと思わされる作品。
