A Christmas Carol is a great story, but the rest of the stories in this are just downright boring.

Well, there can be no doubt A Christmas Carol is the perfect Christmas story - teaching us to count our blessings and that we have a duty to try help those who are less fortunate (more important than ever give what's happened this year). I think it must be one of the few, or even only, story that can be read or adapted (into whatever form) multiple times and never get "old".

To be honest, I am not sure I will read all of the other stories in the book. I've only read the first couple of pages of this collection's other novella, The Haunted Man, and I am not particularly encouraged to continue - it seems overly "wordy" and long-winded. Hardly a surprise then that the story is not nearly as well known as Carol (search for "The Haunted Man" on Google and most of the responses are for an album by English singer Bat for Lashes).

But I don't actually care if the other stories turn out to be duds. A Christmas Carol alone makes this a book I will keep and treasure.

Rereading A Christmas Carol always sparks joy, but this annual reread was done with my book club friends and it made it an even better experience! Analysing Scrooge’s trauma, Dickens’ view on London society, and whether or not the Ghost’s different methods would psychologically be effective or not were some of my favourite topics of our discussion. But the entire chat provided new perspectives and I’m curious to find out how my reread next Christmas will feel.

This is my first Dickens, believe it or not. His notorious wordiness had scared me off, but I’m happy to say that my fear of Dickens is passed. A Christmas Carol far surpassed the other short stories in this book. Overall, I’d give this 3 ⭐️‘s, but the tale of Ebenezer Scrooge deserved the extra star.

Just a beautiful looking book. Oh, and the writing isn't too shabby either!

Love Dickens, and love a bit of seasonal sentimentalism. This Clothbound edition is gorgeous, and has great end notes from Penguin.
