Fellas, is it gay to have a mutual unrecognised crush on your roommate you can only contextualise through the lens of bitter jealously and rivalry, and make an impulsive life-destroying mistake because it’s 1942 and neither of you know what homosexuality is yet?
I'm not at all exaggerating when I say that this novel is one of my favorite books I have ever read, especially when it comes to required reading from high school. It is a story that has really stuck with me, I think mostly because it speaks to universal human experiences.
Who hasn't experienced a bit of a rivalry with a friend? Who hasn't been driven to act out of jealousy? Who hasn't struggled with finding their place among all of those who seem to have it already "figured out"?
I think these are things we can all say we've experienced and I think it is even more poignant for adolescent males who should not find it difficult to relate to the characters, their emotions, and their actions. It's been a while since last I read it, but the imagery and the themes are ones that stick with me.

1 / 4 : If interested, read
[A year from being draftable in The War, beloved class-ragamuffin Phineas and his recalcitrant partner-in-crime Gene make the most of their last summer together]
A 'loss of innocence' novel to a 'T'. 'A Separate Peace' reaches for other things, but is ultimately dragged down by the gloomy gravity of its premise to its inevitable conclusion.
Chose to read it because it was apparently banned for homosexual content, however, except for one use of the word 'fairy' even I struggled to see any. The relation between Phineas and Gene is a lot of things, but particularly gay in any meaningful way it is not.
I listened to a narration by Spike Mcclure

Long before the commonplace usage of words like "codependence" or the coining of phrases such as "frenemies" or "toxic masculinity"...we have this book.
I never read this book in high school, as many did. I think the story works best when conveying what our country and American youth were dealing with at home during World War II.
I have more to say about this book--will come back after I've thought it out.

A troubled 1940s teenager loses his mind like in "the tell-tale heart".
It's hard to understand friendships this outdated and unfriendly.
And Knowles drags on the flat, drab setting. Maybe that's just how wartime felt, in which case war is boring and I'm sorry it didn't end sooner, and I hope more thrilling wars meet the youth so they have something interesting to write about.
