A Separate Peace

This was required reading for me in high school and, as a result, I don't think I read any of it. I hated my 10th grade English class, and since this book was associated with that class, I hated this book.

I decided to seriously read it now, at 27, and I have to say that this book is a masterpiece. Great literature is used and abused in high school (not necessarily the fault of teachers). Time and maturity bring these brilliant works into light.

Interesting look at college boys in World War II.

I chose to interpret mostly everything in this book as queer angst

This book is defiantly a classic. I did not love it in high school, but I am glad I re read it. My high school, teacher really wanted me to see one particular thing, and I got to say I still do not see it.
Gene and his best friend are in a boarding school in New England during World War Two. They talk about the war, school, and the Olympics that will not happen. A glimpse into real life during 1941.

I can see why this is a classic, yet I feel the book foregoes in-depth exploration of Gene's motivations. Deep down he's a very dark dude who caused a lot of bad shit to happen and it was just...like...sure, that's how boys were back then. Let the lad alone. I love how it's written, and I felt everything I needed to feel, but I'm left a little cold by it.

Beautifully written story where every sentence feels intentional and challenges you to think without it feeling super pretentious. Every aspect of this story ties to the themes of lost innocence
