I read this in a whirlwind yesterday, reading it all the way through. I’ve thought about it since and that has crystallized my feelings a little more; this was one of my favorite reading experiences so far. Friendship, coming of age, war, and guilt displayed with gorgeous prose. The sections describing nature were some of my favorites i’ve ever read. This whole book just resonated with me hugely and i couldn’t put it down. The ending was a little messy but i don’t mind. Now i’m gonna do the annoying thing and talk about what other books it reminds me of
A great classic that I read in High School but decided to read again. It's still just as good as I remembered, if not better.

I first read this book for my freshman AP English class in the fall of 1997. Now, 24 years later, I understand it better than I did back then.
This is an endearing novel of friendship, unrequited jealousy, yet a love between brothers even though they aren’t bound by blood.
Still a good book with something that just about anyone can relate to.

i wanted to like this book because my mom almost named my brother phineas after the character in this story but… it was fairly average. and i feel like i’ve read a thousand books like this b4.
I literally finished this book about 5 minutes ago. I honestly found it to be a fantastic book. I've been really into coming-of-age (or whatever you want to call it) fiction lately. I'm currently 16 - 17 in a few months - which makes me about the age of the guys in "A Separate Peace".
I think Knowles really captured adolescence. I was engaged through pretty much all of the book. The penultimate chapter literally had me in tears.
So - overall - fantastic book. I've been reading a lot of books for school recently and it was good to read something I wanted to read. This is certainly up there with all of my favourite books.
A really good read.

Had to force myself to want to read it, good writing style and characters, just not my taste.

Have you ever heard about a book for so long and finally picked it up and realized you had no idea what it was about? That's what this book was for me. Regardless of the surprise, I enjoyed this novel. A seemingly simple premise that can go very deep. I think it would be a good book club read. The psychological and physical pain the boys experience at school is contrasted by the similar pains of those in the war that seems so far away to them. I enjoyed Phineas' antics and puzzled over Glen's thoughts and subsequent reactions to him. These two subjects, along with plenty more, would, as I mentioned, make good conversation in a book club!
