I haven’t read this since middle school or high school and I enjoyed rediscovering elements of the story I didn’t fully remember. A good story about friendship and war and the deep sink of human nature. Looking forward to using it this year with 10th graders!

I read it as part of a banned book challenge, and I have no idea why anyone bothered to ban this one. Seems to have come in the tail end of the "boarding school boy fictional memoir" craze and is not the most interesting or compelling example of the genre.

A beautiful and haunting book, if a little slow in the middle. Very glad to have finally read it.
A classic coming of age story set at a New England boys school during World War II.
How come I can't remember any of this? I know I read it in high school. I even remember the cover. Very strange.
It's incredibly amazing how we perceive and react to those who we see as an enemy. Who is the enemy really?

Reminded me a lot of Catcher in the Rye with more violence.
