I enjoyed rereading this book I read in high school. It’s interesting how you view things differently at different times in your life.
While this isn't the best book I've ever read, it's of great quality and deserves a high rating! It is certainly the best book I've ever had to read for my academics. The book starts off being amazing, with all of Gene's intricate and detailed descriptions of place and the scenery at Devon School, and just gets more fascinating from there. I regret slacking off in my reading of this book, but now that I have finished I feel like I could read it again! This book isn't too complex, yet the way the story is told is mesmerizing! If you're looking for a fabulous book to read in your down time, get this!
Had 70 pages left but I couldn't stick it out. Boring.

I acknowledge that this book is a bit of a classic, the type a lot of us have read in school and whatnot; but damn. I do not see it. The setting is interesting, and I enjoyed the commentary and juxtaposition constantly mentioned between Devon and the war. But characters just didn’t seem,,, like, REAL. Like, partially inconsistent, seeming sort of out of it to me in certain scenes; I really don’t know how to explain it. Basically by the last 50 pages I really didn’t even want all that much to finish it. I didn’t feel attached to anyone, and something about Gene’s narration was getting old and repetitive. Well written for the most part, and I can see the academic potential for a great lecture or essay prompt for it, but unfortunately just not enjoyable.
