Really loved a lot of this -- a sharp, well-informed, and often intimately reflective look at the way we think and talk about addiction. I understand his reasons for doing so, but I do think at least periodic check-ins in other countries/cultures would have been worthwhile. It's hard to talk about the War on Drugs without talking about Duterte, for example. But despite that mild limitation, I think this is a really interesting and informative book.

Fine but I wasn't drawn in wanting more hence the two months it took to read/listen to this. Painted addiction in a new light for me. I can better understand those around me with addictions and be kinder to them.

Took me a month to slug through this one. If only every chapter was written like the last one-- but it was marketed to a general audience and yet read like a textbook with random bits of memoir scattered throughout.

Dr. Fisher’s book is illuminating, well-researched, and engagingly written. I didn’t realize the importance of understanding our country’s relationship to addiction until I read this book. His expertise as a psychiatrist never comes off as condescending—he lets the reader come to their own conclusions and uses his personal testimony with addiction to approach the subject with humility and humanity. Highly recommend!

Some fun facts but it never really goes anywhere, especially if you already agree with the basic premises.

DID NOT FINISH: 41%

Read for a midterm, not really interested enough to finish it under my own steam. It's a fine book just not a non fiction topic I'm willing to spend much time on
