She was tired, sad, lost the will to live even before she acknowledged it herself. Her own personal pain made her not want to exist which is okay. That’s what grief does. People really do die all the time. Some experience it more than others. Some on a regular day and some on big catastrophes. But that’s really what we all face and have to accept eventually: death.

I really enjoyed her pessimism and hyper fixations to make life a little more bearable, but you just gotta face it. That’s an internal decision. It was nice to see her regain personal agency at the end—even if 9/11 had to be the final push.

dear barnes and noble employee,

you were very correct when you said I’d love or hate Ottessa Moshfegh’s writing. I adore it. it’s been so long since a book has spoke to me. I was very surprised by how similar me and the main character were (besides that I am fat, ugly, and trans. so very different there.) the way she desperately wants to sleep was something i relate to. I also was prescribed lots of medication for it. i was heavily relying on Benadryl.

anyways i just loved this book so much i will be picking up more of Ottessa’s books.
