fell upon this story on a whim since it was on ku, but was pleasantly surprised by how i enjoyed it!
overall, i'd give it a 3.5.
I docked points for the start being extremely slow and unwavering for quite some time. since the writing was entertaining enough, i personally didn't mind waiting it out. there was a lot of world building (definitely had to reread some parts and reference the map a few times to understand the politics involved in some dialogue). i don't mind building up political issues in fantasy/fiction, but be aware that this story has a ton of it that you need to stay on top of in order to understand any plot twists or issues.
additionally, i found that the romance in this was a much slower burn than other stories i've read (that typically crack by the half point, or are just insta-lovegag). this was one of the most accurate portrayals of an "enemies-to-lovers stories" i've come across due to the fact that it had accurate tension. it felt more like a subplot to me, if anything; nevertheless, i grew to love the chemistry between aren and lara <3
this story has great development, left off on a really nice cliffhanger, and i can't wait to read the next one!

I had this book on my tbr list for a few years, and I wish I had read it sooner. The world-building was fascinating, and the author's descriptions made it easy for me to visualize the environment. I also enjoyed the chemistry between Lara and Aren, and their banter and points of view. Overall, I'm excited to read the next book in this series.
