I couldn't make my mind up on how to rate this book, either a 3 or a 4. The story is amazing. I read it in shock most of the time, to think that this happened at the same time I was growing up. While I was reading it, I was very interested, but I found that once I put it down, I didn't have that strong urge to pick it back up and read more. I do recommend it, but I can definitely see it not being for everyone.

This was a tough read. As I was reaching the end, I couldn’t help myself from doing a bit of cursory Googling, and I saw that some of the author’s family seem to have come forward and disagreed with her account of events. In a way, I want to believe that it’s overblown, and dramatised. It’s actively quite hard to believe this story because I don’t think I want it to be true - it’s too harrowing, it’s just plain scary in parts. But in the current climate it is easier to believe that people like this *do* exist, far removed from my own lived experience. It’s a fascinating read, and well written, if you can stomach it.

Got to the point of her brother calling her the n word after being covered in grease and thought that this probably isn’t for me.
May be worth it to some others but not too interested myself.
