Really wasn’t expecting to enjoy this as much as i did

I had to read this for my college english class and my gosh it was a struggle just trying to listen to the audiobook on youtube. I stopped reading at Part 4 Section I. The narrator is just annoying. It was hard to understand where I was and what Dowell was talking about because he just kept rumbling on to another topic. I would NOT recommend this book to anyone!!!!!

A+ storytelling! I’ve really been appreciating these satirical observations of the wealthy in the early 20th century (especially when the authors were often caught up in this particular set themselves!) Unexpectedly laugh-out-loud funny in many parts.

Crazy, unreliable, biased narrator talks about how his wife was unfaithful with his friend, everyone dies. Happy days.

I don't see the point of this book. I think some of its value is in showing that "good" people -- meaning the "right sort of people", those who don't have to work for a living and who hold a certain place in society -- are not always morally good people. Or maybe that appearances are deceiving. I am a lawyer, a woman, and was raised in the lowest level of middle-class America. This is not news to me. I didn't like any of these people and I kept on reading the book only because I was hoping to find a point to it. There wasn't one. There was a lot of racism and classism and judgment being passed on people quite casually by our supposedly righteous narrator. And yet this is 'great literature' instead of just a boringly sordid post-Victorian Gothic soap opera.
