managed to be stream-of-consciousness while still being understandable, something a few modernists could learn from. i liked the progression of character arcs told in the order the narrator learned of them, so that in each section the previous section is both explained and contradicted. the characters are fascinating, and i enjoyed the use of christian denominations as a characterization tool. a few aspects of the plot upset me, namely edward and nancy, but i suppose that was intentional as the corruption of the characters are explored. i can definitely see how this book set up a lot of the modernist movement and how many of these themes are explored, particularly alienation, religious factions, sexuality, and some of the literary devices. overall i found the book very enjoyable especially when taking into account the historical context of the book. also, i think leonora should’ve kissed florence just once.
