Early wave of positive psychology but branched into neo cinema development. Taps in relevant socio-economics (immigrant), feminism and comprehensive gender studies, but still needs a new discussion from the author to relate into the updated literature nowadays. Literature and cinephile references are generously mentioned.

This is great. Really readable, too (though chapter one was kind of dry - but its important for setting up the context around what is to be discussed so stick with it!) It might take a couple more reads for me to fully absorb what's going on here, and maybe the rating could change after that, but I really, really liked it. It's careful, thoughtful work. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 in particular were fantastic.

I only recently discovered Sara Ahmed but I wish I'd discovered her work soon. (She has a lot of books to read from; some of them expensive. If you want to see some other material from her for free though, she has a blog: feministkilljoys.com)

I was introduced to this book as a textbook for a Women's Gender and Sexuality Studies class over a year ago and it cracked me wide open, all the things I was neglecting to see about myself and the world around me. Although it is quite dated and very film reference heavy-which I will say is where I struggled the most with this text, the films I hadn't seen or been as familiar with- it's such a wonderful foundation for anyone to begin exploring or learning whatever it is they might be curious about: feminism, happiness, or themselves as an individual in our world.

It basically is like a very comprehensive film and book review.
