A quick read that packs in a slew of information on important topics. On topics with which you feel you are already familiar, it may feel too introductory, however, there is always the capacity to learn more or, at least, have a refresher. I particularly appreciated Chapter 3 on Class and Chapter 5 on Race & Racism.

Read This To Get Smarter by Blair Imani provides a concise overview to topics including identity, relationships, class, disability, race, and sex and gender, with an overall theme of respecting the humanity of everyone. I highly recommend Blair’s social media accounts as well and I greatly appreciate her as an ally to Jewish people. ⁣

I wish this was required reading for everyone. In school, in college, in work. This is a good baseline understanding of these concepts of just being a better person. I imagine it might be a little basic for people who study these topics more, but I was still able to learn a few things. I thought the topic on adoption wasn’t nuanced enough, but that is all… I am sure others may have opinions on things they know a bit about as well. But good, short read to understanding the basics.

This book is a great place to start for someone who is looking to unpack their internalized racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia and more. As a person who has been unlearning and relearning since 2020, this book helped me see things I have missed or didn’t fully understand.

Imani’s voice is light and helpful. No judgement resides there. She opens up the door to have a conversation. She is extremely intelligent, and puts things in a way that kinda blows your mind. Or at least she blew mine. I felt seen and heard and loved.

This books is for everyone. Even if you think you’re completely evolved and above discrimination, no you aren’t. There is something in here for everyone. Let us be humble and learn something new. It’s time to get smarter about the world we live in, and the one we want to create.

I really liked how this book reintroduced different aspects of our identities, how we form them, and left room for me to question my understanding of my identity as well as ways I approach other people's identity.
