Rounding it down from 3.5/5. This was my first Gabriel G. Marquez and I am glad I picked it up. This was a story of a 90 year old man who decided to gift himself a 14 year old virgin on his birthday; now what unfolds is - certainly weird - but also very artfully portrayed which makes the book a beauty. I did not find it erotic/too adult-y as was written on the back; this work was very much in the lines of Lolita, I feel. Sure, the circumstances may creep you out but then there is so much more to the story. It is a story of a 90 year old man finally finding love, not sure if he was grasping the reality on the way though. Oh well, as long as *both* are happy. Recommended - up for discussion! :)

I think his writing is beautiful, his settings are evocative and masterfully portrayed, and yes, his books are pretty romantic, and I always enjoy magical realism. It's a treasure.

"At the end, when the king's servants find her dead of thirst in her bed, it seemed to me that my girl had been about to wake when she heard the name. That's who she was--Delgadina."

"Sex is the consolation you have when you can't have love."

"How wonderful, she said. I've always known that jealousy knows more than truth does."
