It starts with a fart and ends with a sheep, but the contents in between are largely enjoyable.

Scalzi continues to write what he writes best, which both helps and hinders this novel. The male characters all have the same tone and sense of humor - which is to say, Scalzi's - and the two female characters have limited speaking lines with which to develop themselves. I know he has written more complex yet still entertaining characters, but it doesn't mean I didn't enjoy my time with Harry.

The plot was slow to start, as we had to be introduced to several sets of characters who played central roles in the plot. Once it got going it was a rollicking space action-adventure. I appreciated Scalzi detailing the computer technology just enough to be mostly credible, but not too specific to date the writing or the future. There was one point that broke the future setting for me for just a moment: sadly I doubt that M&Ms will be $0.85 in vending machines by the time we're out in space, but as a candy lover I can sure hope. The story wraps itself up in a very satisfying way, with machinations and action abound.

I read the Kindle edition, and I was disappointed to find several typos in this copy.

This book was absolutely nothing one might expect it to be, and it was wonderful! So creative, so much fun, and just.. yes. Very very good. Thoroughly entertaining, and definitely recommended.

Struggled with the first chapter or so, then I was hooked.

Again, another extremely clever premise, written with a good sense of humor. What more could you ask for? Plus, the title alone makes you pick the book up. Another one I finished and immediately handed to my husband, saying "You have to read this. You'll love it."
