A grumpy former pro footballer inherits his best friend’s house. It’s under renovation and the woman in charge definitely interests him! They become roommates and a short term fling with an expiration date.
This was free to read and listen on KU and it’s definitely worth the read!

I thought the premise was really interesting, but it fell flat and I didn't really connect with it or the characters. I did like how the author explored grief, and I thought this aspect was really well done. I did like their partnership and how they came together under these terrible circumstances and found each other while accomplishing their goal. I was hoping for something to really draw me in, but it just wasn't there. I am really excited for the next book though!

On paper, this has what usually makes a great read for me, but there was a definite imbalance between the tropes used to build the story and the chemistry of the MCs. Their interactions felt forced, I felt no real connection between them, there wasn't much plot or character development as even by the end of the book I didn't feel like I knew anything real about either Burke or Charlotte, their characters felt like cardboard cutouts of what they were meant to be and the overall theme of grief in the story instead of adding emotional impact just overshadowed every aspect of the book and actually took away the chance for the romance to flourish in my opinion. Burke (yes, really, that's the MMCs name... can you imagine trying to scream that in a passionate moment with a straight face because I can't) needs therapy, and both he & Charlotte need to work on their communication.
Unfortunately, this is yet another book this month that has fallen flat for me, and even having the talented Vanessa Edwin & Connor Crais narrating couldn't save this for me. Their perfomances were wonderful as always, but the story itself I found lacking. 🌶

It's been a REALLY long time since I last had to put together a Power Point presentation, but I'd be more than willing to dust off those skills in order to properly explain just how much I adored reading Karla Sorensen's The Best Laid Plans. This book had a slow-burn romance with healthy doses of wit and humor and some much appreciated angst. (What can I say, I'm an angst addict at heart.) There was well-thought-out and clear development, both for the main characters and for their story, with a great deal of emotional growth, especially from Burke. Knowing Burke's and Charlotte's back stories highlighted why there was some caution and trepidation in terms of involving themselves in a romantic relationship, choosing instead to engage in a fling with a pre-acknowledged end. I loved seeing these two fall in love, and they certainly had some noteworthy support from those nearest and dearest to them, with special mention going to Charlotte's godmother, Daphne, and Daphne's non-boyfriend, Richard, and Tansy, Burke's sister. Speaking of Tansy, dare I hope for her to get her own happily-ever-after, maybe with a certain builder named William? And I'm definitely eager to see what awaits Liam and his co-guardian. While waiting to see what's next in the Best Men series, I'm happily handing the first best man and the woman who made him even better five stars.
