4.5 stars!

This was my first manga and I love that it’s focused around art. The main character was interesting and after I adjusted to the flow and style of right to left reading and how to follow the panels, it was a quick read. I can’t imagine how long it takes to write and illustrate a graphic story like this!

I want to stick with this series so I can’t wait to see what book 2 is like!

This was a little slow paced, but I enjoyed how much focus on art there was.

'Blue Period, Vol. 1' by Tsubasa Yamaguchi is the 2020 Manga Tasho Grand Prize winner and is about a young man deciding on whether a life and career in art is a good idea.

Yatora is a popular guy who drinks and watches sports with his friends. He is also a top notch student, and his mom is encouraging him to attend a good school for his future. When an art class assignment gets good compliments, Yatora finds himself among the schools art club students. His ideas about what going to art school looks like are upended as he finds himself in the disciplines of his art studies.

There is a lot of information hidden along with the story. At times, it felt like a pamphlet trying to sell me on an art career, but the story came along and saved things. I like the mix of story and information. The art is very good and I really enjoyed this art school story.

I received a review copy of this manga from Kodansha Comics and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this manga.
