Really interesting story pulled out of a short old song lyrics. I loved that this was a story from western England, a part that doesn’t get a voice very often. I thought the siblings were all very well written and individual with their own flaws and drives. I thought the trans elements of the book were very well done, respectful and true to the book’s time period.

Wow! This was powerful, brutal, heartbreaking, and moving.
We follow 3 sisters, daughters of the king: Riva the eldest who has been disfigured in an accident, Keyne who is actually a man desperate to be seen for who he is, and Sinne, the youngest. I actually didn’t like Sinne for 95% of the book. She’s spoilt and petulant, and I can’t help but think her fate was her own fault.
Tristan, a handsome stranger, becomes the wedge driven between the sisters and part of a tragic arc. I was not at all familiar with the ballad the book is based on, so I wasn’t prepared for a rather gruesome section.

Keyne’s story is really where this book shines. His connection to magic and the land, his path to acceptance, and his menteeship with Myrhdin were the heart of the book. I would recommend it for that alone.

This is an emotional one at the end, but it was all really beautifully done.
