I’ve read Anne Frank and Elie Wiesel’s books, so it was very interesting to read about the events through the eyes of an older generation and one who was part of the Underground system.

During such a horrific time in their lives Corrie and Betty continued to live in faith! It’s inspiring to hear what all they went through and despite their circumstances they found ways to see God’s provisions.

With everything going on in the world right now, I felt drawn to stories of survival and resistance during harrowing times. A couple of weeks ago, while browsing my wishlist during a book sale, I noticed The Hiding Place along with a few others was marked down for less than half the usual price. It felt like a steal.
When the book arrived, I noticed it had glowing endorsements from several well-known evangelical preachers. Having grown up in that world, I was immediately wary. I feared I might be stepping back into the same kind of ideology I've spent nearly fifteen years trying to unlearn. But as I read, I was surprised. I didn’t find much of the evangelical worldview I expected. It actually felt like the book had been misunderstood, praised by the same people who misread C.S. Lewis and Mere Christianity, seeing something in it that may not actually be there.
Corrie ten Boom’s story moved me. Her resilience in the face of unimaginable cruelty is deeply affecting. At the same time, her firsthand account of the ways human dignity can be denied and erased is disturbing and hard to sit with. I’ll admit I struggle with survival stories that credit God for the outcome. Why didn’t God save the others? But this is Corrie’s story, and this is how she chose to tell it.
What I did admire deeply was the conviction that led Corrie and her family to help others, even at great personal risk. Her father, when given the chance to go free after being arrested, refused. He said he would continue to protect and serve anyone who came to his door. That kind of moral courage, rooted in compassion, stays with you.

Listened to the audiobook. Despite its horrifying topic, this book is filled with hope. A very encouraging way to end and start my year.
