As a survey of British society during the war, this would be difficult to beat. All the more astonishing considering Marwick was 30 at the time he published it, and had access to far fewer sources than we do today.

The core of the book relies on a deep reading of official reports, newspapers and memoirs, which are woven together to create a near-comprehensive narrative encompassing most areas of society.

The book's theme is the transformation which Britain underwent, in particular the radical moves towards collectivism. A concluding chapter reviews these changes into the interwar years.

My only criticism would be a lack of a properly four-nations approach: Ireland in particular is not included in the book's scope.

Strongly recommended to anyone interested in the home front.
