3.5. Perhaps a notch better than the first 2 in the series. As annoying as Manon Bradshaw can sometimes be, I look forward to her next outing.

This is a fantastic read. A dark, gritty, relatable crime, which was oddly humourous throughout. This is the third book in a series but I haven't read any of the previous books and enjoyed this as a standalone. I found the main character refreshingly real. I really enjoyed this book and would read more of her books. The author has a wonderful way of making the characters real and you can relate to some of their everyday lives. This just adds to the story and somehow makes it more powerful.

3.5 stars rounded up. Remain Silent is the third book featuring DS Manon Bradshaw. I haven't read the previous books so I was a little lost at first but then easily caught up to the characters and their relationships. I thought the story involving immigrants is timely and thought-provoking, and I liked that aspect of the book best. The characters resort to terrible things to survive and their actions have a ripple effect towards others, leading to tragic and shocking circumstances. I really felt for the characters, especially Matis. The inclusion of anti-immigration characters showed them to be worthy antagonists and they provided some really tense scenes. The book handles xenophobia and racism in a stark, unflinching way.

While I liked the core mystery, I wasn't enamoured by Bradshaw and the other detectives. I found Bradshaw's voice hard to warm up to and her personal life takes a lot of space. There's a side storyline involving Davy, whose main problem is deciding whether to sleep with another co-worker while feeling guilty about his fiancee. I really didn't care about his story and I kept wanting to go back to the immigrants. This isn't a feel-good book by any means and I can see it appealing to readers who prefer their thrillers gritty and realistic.

CW: suicide, domestic abuse, physical violence

This was the third book about detective Manon Bradshaw, and honestly, I wish I had stopped after the first. They’ve lost steam drastically in my opinion, and this one felt like a mess of ideas and storylines and attempts at relevance/deeper themes that just didn’t work. Not a fan.

Slow start, but galloped to a nerve wracking ending! Fascinating themes of exploitation, racism, dysfunctional family and middle age crises.

This is the third in the DI Manon Bradshaw series.... and it is another fantastic read!

I love the character of Manon - a tough, hardworking, loyal, funny, realistic women :-)

The story focuses on modern slavery, human trafficking and exploitation.. managing to be both entertaining and informative around this timely, usually sad subject.

Read it in one sitting and cant wait for the next one!

Book 3 of the Manon Bradshaw series did not disappoint. I love that the author shows Manon with all her foibles, and her character flaws. Manon is just like all of us, with the running commentary in her head. The plot of the book revolves around a suicide of a refugee who is part of the labor imported to do the backbreaking work others wont do. It is tragic to read that people are used as slave labor in this time. The side plots of Manon and her friends lives adds so much to this book.i highly recommend

This is the only series of books I read because the main character, Manon Bradshaw, is incredibly relatable. I usually don't read series because they inevitably disappoint. I pleased to say this book continues a wonderful world full of characters that feel so familiar.
