I enjoyed Manon’s character, but found the subplots unnecessary. I appreciated the experience of the Eastern European struggles as immigrants in England. Slower paced than I’m used to, unsure if I’d read any others by this author.
I really enjoyed this book. It seems on the surface to be a standard police procedural but is brought ot life by the quality of the writing. The characters are very likeable and realistically portrayed. I liked the ordinariness and messiness of their lives. The plot about the death of an immigrant worker was good - interesting, relevant and well written. I would read another one of these if there is to be a series. Very good.
Police procedural with strong subplots and a mainly progressive political angle that is explored through the narrators' thoughts. Investigation into the mysterious death of a Lithuanian exploited worker in the Fenlands, and an operation to end the exploitation, takes a view on right-wing groups, police public relations, and a quite pessimistic view of love and relationships in middle age! Readers with anti-immigrant sentiment will not like this book I think (but they might learn something). Not a happy ending.
Okay, it's a police murder novel. Not much by way of detective insight, but they aren't those sorts of police. There's drudgery and boredom and life changing vicissitudes, and the horrors of Eastern European forced labour. It's all the better for this, and funny too, but apart from the murder mystery, all other questions raised remain unanswered, apart from: 'Life's too short for bullshit', and who could possibly argue with that?
I enjoy Susie Steiner's novels about DS Bradshaw very much. It's like a mix of a good police procedural with some Bridget Jones mixed in. I hope there are more in the future!
Disappointing after the previous two in the series. By this third book I've become bored with Manon's perimenopausal angst!
I really enjoy Susie Steiner's characters and the plot was excellent--with a twist too!
I really enjoyed Susie Steiner’s ‘Missing, Presumed’ and was certainly loving the prospect of a DS Manon Bradshaw series. Alas, I somehow missed ‘Persons Unknown’ when all of a sudden ‘Remain Silent’ arrived. I went on to read ‘Remain Silent’, knowing that having missed a book would bother me endlessly, but ultimately knowing that I could always go back and read the missing story (which is exactly what I will do).
I really love Steiner’s ability to portray sensitive topics and struggles, issues themselves that are exceptionally vast and real, but yet balance it with what could be considered the trivial personal battles of DS Manon, with her family struggles, marital questioning, authoritative anguishes and her toil to juggle life and work.
Perhaps this book could be considered a bit depressive, but what it is, is honest. With a touch of brilliant humour, great characters, and an interesting plot to round it off as a great read.
Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollins UK for a review copy.

3.5 stars because this one was a bit ragged for me. I had a harder time jumping back and forth between the different POVs than I did with the previous Manon books. Funny and well written though, and still recommended.
