It's a good paranormal romance YA debut novel for Stephenie Meyer (we are actively ignoring the rest of the series here). The writing is basic but compelling, which makes for an easy, quick read.
It's not particularly empowering but as feminist as a mormon lady can get.
Having never been a shy girlâ„¢, i don't relate to Bella at all, but that doesn't make her a bad character, she's just not very assertive or particularly confident (which sadly doesn't stop her from looking down on basically every human being - not just other girls although mostly other girls-).
The book didn't need to have an action packed conclusion but it did, and even though it felt a little rushed, the plot of this paranormal romance could have just been the mystery of what is Edward Cullen and the falling in love with him and yet she went a step further. I'm not mad, Meyer is actually quite decent at writing thrilling scenes. It's the exposition and trivialities that doom her.
The absolute certainty that this isn't a YA paranormal romance worse than the average, added to the nostalgia component and the imaginary blue filter, make me enjoy Twilight immensely. Sue me.
I do have to condemn the author's racism, which I've learned is very ingraned into her religion and was really apparent by both her writing and her actions irl.
