this is a terrifying look into abuse, and how it affects people. there is no way to appropriately give a star rating. most of the poems are very short, only 2-4 lines, with some a little longer.
The real impact of this collection is how much she's suffered, and how it's very clearly warped her view of herself and the world around her. it's a cry for help with the caveat that she's not ready to accept it.
my greatest hope, based on the introduction and quote on the back cover that were presumably written last, is that she has found her way to confidence and a place of safety and peace.

Type of read: Commuter Read.
What made me pick it up: MGK released 'Lonely Road,' I watched the music video, saw Fox, started going through a list of newly available audiobooks at my library, and 'Pretty Boys are Poisonous' popped up. It felt right.
Overall rating: The realness and rawness that Fox uses in their writing is absolutely gutting. I thoroughly enjoyed 'Pretty Boys Are Poisonous and am thankful Fox felt they were at a place where they could share their feelings with the world. I do see the difference from quote unquote traditional poetry structure that some other reviews questioned, and I think it's important to note that poetry doesn't have to fit a specific mold. Poetry, at its core, is about using words artistically to share a feeling.
Reader's Note: 'Pretty Boys are Poisonous' includes themes of physical, mental, and emotional domestic abuse; drug use; sex; alcohol; miscarriage; self-harm; and suicide.

Listen, poetry is not my expertise but these chilled me (check trigger warnings). She says this is not about MGK but this is absolutely about MGK. She needs to get out of this relationship before he kills her. She needs to get out of this relationship before these poems are used as evidence when he's on trial for her murder. I'm legitimately scared for her.
