Ah! A Pacific Islander fantasy novel. There’s so a lot of good world building that I fell in love with. Specifically, the markings and the magic on the island. There were so many interesting politics at play too, both on the island and between different nations. I love a good childhood friends to reunion to lovers. Although, the lovers part felt a little rushed and suddenly they’re dating. The ending in full felt a little rushed. I would honestly love another book to make the ending drag out to a satisfying conclusion.

A vivid island setting and lots of sea dragons set the stage for this coming-of-age adventure. Are dragons monsters meant for human benefit or apex predators worthy of respect? This is a question the adventurers explore while also coming into adulthood.

At times I found the vibe uneven - sometimes brutal and other times like a narratively expected punch was pulled. But on the whole, the ending was satisfying enough and the world was worth visiting.

Every wish demands a price.

this is a beautiful story about family, greed, and sacrifice. i NEED more tropical-set fantasy; the descriptions are so lush and vivid, with an exciting seafaring islander adventure undertone. hanalei is clever, brave, and compassionate as a protagonist, and her sympathy and understanding for the seadragons is admirable. her budding romance with sam was organic and sweet, it was a very well-done childhood friends to lovers.

i loved the idea of dragon eggs being dragonfruit, and the theme of greed and sacrifice was played out well w the wishes and their costs. how far are people willing to go for glory? for their dreams? one pays for their wish, whether it was made out of selfishness or selflessness alike.

also so cool to see a matriarchal society and how it works.

as someone who's been pushing for writers to stop needlessly extending their books, this is a rare exception that i'd say i wish this were longer! a follow-up novella to learn more about the seadragons would be fun, too.

tw for some violence/blood/injury/death, animal cruelty/death.

We are defined by our hardships, and how we face them. We are made stronger or weaker by those we hold closest to us.

I went into this one with low expectations because the last YA fantasy book I read from Book of the Month was "What the River Knows" and I thought that book was terrible. This book is so much better! I loved the setting/atmosphere with the tropical plants, mysterious ocean, and living tattoos. I loved the main characters, and the various supporting characters felt 3-dimensional as well. The plot was suspenseful and compelling. I do have some unanswered questions and concerns about how some plot points were left at the end, but those are small. Overall I really enjoyed this, a great summer fantasy read.

Trigger warnings: Animal death, childhood loss of parents, a brief scene of implied intention of sexual assault.

Fantasy is a genre that I generally enjoy, but that also often gives me pause unless it falls into more of a "young adult" category because sometimes I find it goes far too in depth and I lose interest after a few chapters. That was definitely not the case here. The story was relatively basic, but interesting and fun enough that I really got lost in it and became invested in the characters and the worldbuilding. The emotional aspect of it was highly multi-dimensional and I definitely got much more than I expected out of the story. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.
