Beautiful writing, just like the last book.

The lightless remind me of that black oil from the x-files.

2.5 stars. After the beauty of the first book, I was disappointed with this second and final book in the series. I thought that the complexity and depth of the characters was lost, and even the descriptions of the world became quite superficial. The ending made use of a deus ex machina which I felt cheapened the story. However, I understand that it was used because the “big bad” was comparatively too powerful, there was arguable no other way that they could have been thwarted. I did like that we were able to view the world through Lina’s lens along with Ris’s, because this kept the plot progressing smoothly. I enjoyed Lina as a character, it was nice to see that she had a stronger fortitude than first believed.

I'm sorry.. but what the hell kind of ending was that horse shit? Or did I read a different book than everybody else?

Fierce Like a Firestorm was a book that ended up annoying me to no end. Especially with certain chapters. Ugh, but it also had some good moments that kept me intrigued. I really did like that these two sisters, Lina and Iris, were trying to find one another and basically save them and the world. YET, that ending was just 'meh' to me. I'm not really happy with it and I don't know what to do with myself after reading that - maybe twiddle my thumbs or stare at a wall for a couple of hours before diving into another book. Either choice sounds awful but a bit better than that ending..

In the first book, Wicked Like a Wildfire, I loved the writing and everything about it but this time around I was just getting so annoyed. It was too much of something in this and I just felt bored while reading this at times. Especially when Iris was with Fjolar.. and then when Luka was kind of acting like a baby back bitch because of Iris not coming back. Like calm down dude, she's still alive just wait a hot second.

Then about the halfway point, it got a bit more interesting but that's about it. It would've been nice to be in love with the whole book but I just wasn't. I did, however, like the little magical aspects I got throughout the book. Plus, the relationship between Lina and Niko was adorable and kind of it's saving grace for me.

Overall, I probably would've liked this a bit more if the ending was different than what I got - but 'll live.

This book just seemed to carry over many of the problems I had with the first and created some new ones along the way. I am not a fan of the trope where a villain has a tragic backstory and that is supposed to give them redemption without them actually doing anything redeemable. This book was told in multiple perspective but it also seemed like nothing happened? And it was 300 pages so that’s a lot of nothing.

I have such a deep love for Wicked Like a Wildfire and Fierce Like a Firestorm in a way that's almost hard to explain. It makes me feel whole in a way that I never knew was empty. I love the story between these two sisters and how they make each other stronger because of and despite their differences. They are each such passionate characters and I love them fiercely. It's such a beautiful look at family, at women, at the bonds between them, and magic and the earth and everything in between.
I did have a little trouble remembering all the details from book 1 (no fault of the author's), but once I got into the story everything fell back into place.
"No one ever grieved for black holes, but what would it feel like to crave light so badly, when it was the deepest of your nature to inhale it to nothing whenever it ventured too close?"
"He sat with me a while longer, watching the wheeling of the stars across the sky. They twinkled in the shimmering way they always did in this world; the astronomical term for it was "seeing", I remembered. A strange way to put it, but nice. As if even while we watched them, the stars saw us back."

I never like sequels that completely undo the villain of the last story. It feels like all the emotional investment from the last book was wasted now that we’re supposed to like and forgive them suddenly.

The author certainly had a flair for impressive language, description and world building, but these were so heavy that it distracted me from the story. I was so focused on how she described things that I almost forgot WHAT she was describing. It took me a long time to read because I felt like I needed to rest by brain between each reading! But I am still excited to read her other series next. Maybe I just didn't connect very well to the story.
