Wow….been hearing about this book for a long time and finally got around to reading it. I should have started this way earlier. The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie was such an incredible read. The writing, humor, and characters were all fantastic. World building feels like it is just scratching the surface. If you are expecting tons of action and battles that are typical of grim fantasy, come to this book with slightly less expectations. While there is that in the novel, this is really a character piece that is bringing all these people together before the real quest begins. Think of Fellowship of the Ring up until the fellowship meet each other in Rivendell. This series is already shaping up to be one of my all time favorites. If you like to read books with a lot of character development and intrigue, this is a must read. There is some language in it. Also, as a side note, if you like Audiobooks, the narration by Steven Pacey is absolutely exceptional. Already have Book 2 queued up and ready to go!

Kept feeling like this was going to kick into life but there’s a real sense this book is preamble to the real story to come in later books, of chess pieces being moved into position to start.

Glotka is a glorious monster of a character though.
