this was like wonderful and mindblowing i forgot to rate it when i read it
I think VN would make a much better movie, but it would face the same difficulty: it hinges on a philosophical abstraction which dissolves upon close examination. This is not unusual in pop fiction, but normally one can suspend disbelief without thinking about it too much. Here it's impossible not to think about it because the story depends on it -- the plot builds to it, ever so slowly -- to the point of tedium sometimes -- and finally reveals to thunderous applause -- a pretentious bit of nonsense. So the reader is left with two choices: either accept the philosophical jibberish upon which the story depends and appreciate the otherwise conventional coming-of-age story, or be disappointed. I'm afraid I'm in the latter camp.
3 star book maybe the first half. Then I couldn’t stop reading and I’m like OKAY YOU FOUR STARS IN HIDING. Then the ending made me want to throw it across the room… I despise endings that DONT answer anything

This book is weird. This book is excellent. Imagine Harry Potter but really fucked up, and on mushrooms. And also lets throw in linguistics. I've not read anything like this before and it was quite a gripping tale to the end.
