Read it in Russian language. Several years ago in fact. It was an audiobook to be presise. Very unique and atmospheric piece. Highly recommend. I don't see any connections with Harry Potter though. As for it to be Kafkaesque - completely agree.

I don't understand much of what I just read but it's extremely compelling. Sasha is a great character who you sympathize with and cheer for. Even if I don't understand her transformation I was happy to be part of the journey.
If gothic, magical, dark academia told a gritty story of creation, this would be the book.

i did not know what was going on most of the time, but to the book's credit, it did manage to keep me engaged and curious as to what would happen next long enough to not bother dnfing. love a grammar-based magic system, but the opaqueness of what the students are learning and what is going on at the school made the first two thirds of the book a bit frustrating. the whole time i was reading i was going back and forth on whether or not this was just a cult/high control group, which i still think the book is a good metaphor for in the end but at the same time is not really what the book set out to depict. i did not find the characters or the plot otherwise compelling. also just found out it is apparently book 1 in a trilogy, and i don't think i will continue with it. this was enough for me!
