Thank you to everyone who pushed me to read this book, despite being a long-ish one, it was totally worth it. It sat on my TBR for almost 1 year, but I’ve finally done it and it is now my number one book in the ‘most confusing, but absolutely brilliant’ category. I find it difficult to describe it and place within a genre because it’s got a bit of everything - it’s a coming of age story with amazing character (and world) build, mixing reality with fantasy, but in a way that even though you can’t exactly relate to the metamorphosis element of the story, the characters’ struggles, wishes, thoughts feel very real. I’ve definitely felt SEEN in the way Sasha struggles with her mother and the initial relationship they have turns into complete avoidance and lies (her mother was actually the only character I truly disliked).

This was a new experience in some ways for me. Vita Nostra explores some familiar ground on things like a magic school, coming of age, and dark academia. It perhaps feels closest to The Gray House or The Magicians in my experience. But it really is something unique. It subverts expectations, it obfuscates intentionally on basic events, and it is just plain weird. This is without a doubt one of the strangest books I have ever read. Though... I think it works. At least for the most part. I was invested in the main narrative, I was actively cheering for Sasha at every turn, I was concerned and distressed for her and those in her life. There are just a lot of bizarre moments that make up this novel but throughout them all I was compelled to continue on. I had to turn the page. I had to see what happened next. I had to see where this was leading. It turns out, I wasn't fully ready for where it did lead but I thought it was a clever and interesting place that changed how I viewed the prior events. I need to reread this book at some point just to see if I can better piece together what is actually happening in it. Overall though, I love how different and engaging this book was.

Non ci sono parole decenti per descrivere questo libro, poiché già di per sé è un libro molto strano. Quindi, se vi approccerete alla lettura di Vita Nostra, sappiate che sarà normalissimo non capire l'interezza di ciò che sta succedendo. Detto ciò, è comunque un libro che ti cattura e che ti invoglia sempre di più ad avanzare per cercare di scoprire anche solo un minimo quello che sta succedendo alla protagonista.
In questo primo volume della trilogia (per ora è stato tradotto solo questo primo volume), troviamo una giovane diciassettenne di nome Saška che, durante una vacanza al mare con la madre, incontra un uomo che la obbliga a fare delle prove. Successivamente, Saška sarà ammessa in uno strano Istituto al posto di frequentare l'università. Come già detto, non si capisce bene che cosa insegnino in questo istituto ma si sa fin dall'inizio che è un luogo strano.
Durante il romanzo seguiamo Saška durante i suoi primi tre anni in questo Istituto situato nella cittadina di Torpa, tra le lezioni che sembrano ogni pagina più assurde, alla sua relazione con i professori e con i compagni. Secondo me, all'interno di questo primo volume possiamo ritrovare la grande metafora del cambiamento ma soprattutto dell'elevazione dal punto di vista psico-fisico.
I personaggi all'interno del romanzo sono tutti molto interessanti nonostante spesso siano da considerarsi grigi a causa delle loro azioni o comportamenti. Persino i personaggi più distanti geograficamente o sentimentalmente dalla protagonista hanno una loro personalità e peculiarità che te li fa riconoscere appena vengono nominati. Questo loro essere dei personaggi grigi, però, non te li fa mai apprezzare al 100% ma li rende, nonostante tutto, interessanti da leggere e da scoprire.
La cosa che più ho amato in questo romanzo è sicuramente come vengono gestiti i colpi di scena. Infatti, molto spesso le problematiche che vengono proposte - non solo quelle di Saška, ma proprio in generale - vengono quasi subito risolte. Ciò dà la possibilità al libro di avere diversi colpi di scena, anche uno dopo l'altro, senza lasciare nulla in sospeso e anche, e soprattutto, di non annoiare mai. L'unica nota dolente a questo riguardo è stata la parte centrale, un po' difficile almeno per me da superare.
Infine, ho odiato - in senso positivo - il finale. Infatti, io sono una grande amante dei finali aperti e questo libro ha probabilmente uno dei miei finali aperti preferiti poiché, come del resto per tutto il libro, non si capisce bene cosa sta succedendo. Ciò non solo ti spinge a voler leggere il volume successivo, ma da anche un bel input per cercare di comprendere ciò che si è appena letto.
Se avete qualche teoria sul finale, lasciatemela pure o parliamone in privato!

Ciò dà la possibilità al libro di avere diversi colpi di scena, anche uno dopo l'altro, senza lasciare nulla in sospeso e anche, e soprattutto, di non annoiare mai. L'unica nota dolente a questo riguardo è stata la parte centrale, un po' difficile almeno per me da superare.
Infine, ho odiato - in senso positivo - il finale. Infatti, io sono una grande amante dei finali aperti e questo libro ha probabilmente uno dei miei finali aperti preferiti poiché, come del resto per tutto il libro, non si capisce bene cosa sta succedendo. Ciò non solo ti spinge a voler leggere il volume successivo, ma da anche un bel input per cercare di comprendere ciò che si è appena letto.

I enjoyed the book overall but the ending fell flat, and I realized I was not excited for the sequel to learn what happened after the ending. It was all very confusing and didn’t get much clearer as the story went on. Very interesting concept but not for me.
