Song: Escape! By Philip Glass

I struggle to put my thoughts down on what I thought about this book. It took me half an hour to settle on 4 stars as a rating!

I have never read anything like this. The feeling of dread, despair, the anxiety Sasha went through was palpable. The obsession, the need and want to learn more, become more. Her journey of growing up and trying to let go was heartbreaking and familiar.

I can't say I understand everything 100% - I suppose I was as confused as the first years in the novel, lol. But I know I want more of this world regardless. I didn't want it to end.

(Disclourse: My review is of an uncorrected proof I recently won from Goodreads)

Hmmmm not sure what just happened, but I think I liked it...? I sat in a sort of book-hangover stupor for a day or so after finishing it as my brain tried to math lady meme itself into understanding. I typically don't like really open-ended conclusions so I'm glad the next 2 books have already been translated and released. Now I just need to hype myself up to dive back in and just sit at a desk with it until I understand. Although I don't speak Russian, the translation seemed extremely well done and added a whole extra layer to the linguistic themes!

I originally came across this book suggestion via a reddit thread for readers looking for H***y P****r alternatives (F U, JK!) and I had already read the Scholomance Trilogy by Naomi Novik (which I loved and still love, highly recommend!) But this novel makes the Scholomance Trilogy seem like a toddler's cozy bedtime story. It's bleak. But again, I think it really worked, hence 4 stars.

Book could have been shorter and the ending fell flat and didn’t fit the book
