Pleasantly surprised by this read, perfect for lovers of Ice Planet Barbarians. Authors did not sacrifice world-building or plot for the romance, which was pretty sweet especially considering one of them was a “spider man.” This is the first of a series, so expect to be left on a lurch!

Fave notes:
Lots of set up describing the spidery alien society in the beginning, it's a lot of detailed descriptions but it's easy to read. MC is found in a Cryosleep chamber on alien planet by her spider-like love interest, which is as good a set up as any. Well done bondage with implied aftercare in the form of nesting. The language barrier between the m/f leads is cleverly overcome by mutual teaching.

The male lead is a loner trying to escape an unwanted arranged relationship with alien tyrant queen, and what's nice is that his status as a victim is taken seriously by the story itself. There's aphrodisiac pheromones if that's your thing, and it hints to almost a solemate type feel. The weaving as a love language moments are adorable!
Minor notes: Sassy banter all around with everyone, the main characters are all very bold. Love interests both face a lot of confusion but the male lead is very patient/devoted while the female lead is very determined/clever. Interesting past trauma all around. Fight scenes are quick but done well to showcase power/motivation. Mysterious alien legends trope is a favorite of mine. Political issues in alien society draw out a lot of emotion, and character responses to it are satisfying and reasonable. All the aliens put importance on their interpersonal relationships and it makes them very relatable and fun to read even outside of the romance plot.

I was not expecting to like this as much as I did.  Over the last year I have really started to read unapologetically.  For the first 30-35% or so, I had the roughest time connecting to this book, I had to keep going back to the cover to envision Ketahn’s physicality and the worldbuilding was confusing for a bit.  The writing was really well done, the descriptions were great.  There is a bit of the standard hands exploring with dubious consent and some forcible mating.  Not SA, but moreso “You are my mate now” type situation.  Ivy’s journey through this book was an interesting interpretation of how someone would handle waking up on a new planet with a person-thing you can’t understand.  Her acceptance of her attraction to Ketahn and her new life was delightful.

I didn’t love the cliffhanger ending, and I will read the next book and hold off judgment until I can see how it wraps up; trilogies aren’t usually my favorite things.
