I enjoyed reading this book, but there were definitely times were I felt like I just wanted to “fast forward” a bit. It has a great storyline with certain similarities to the movie The Village.

I’m going to tell it how it is without spoilers. The writing is good. The characters are a little flat, but you’ll find out why. The plot line is intriguing from the very beginning. Just when you feel like you’re going to fall off of the cliff of understanding the author will rescue you. This is all great.
The reason my rating fell to three stars is because of the HOW element as the story is resolved. It requires a suspension of disbelief greater than any I was willing to submit for a novel that had been otherwise so believably thrilling.

This book was just okay for me. It was your very run of the mill thriller. I saw almost all of the twists coming which was a bummer, but I was pretty convinced for a hot minute there that this was a magical realism/Gothic situation and I'm not convinced that wasn't true. The description felt too flowery for the content of the book, although I understand the reasoning behind it. I normally love flowery language but it felt wrong to romanticize everything given the context of the book. And the fact that the characters were decidedly NOT romanticizing their own lives.
At the beginning of the book I was absolutely tf not rooting for Calla and Theo because they were both shit people. Honestly, until basically part 4 I thought they were both shit people. It's also insane that they were like
I know we just left a super dangerous mind control cult but lets go back 🤢🤢

There were so many plot holes in this book that I was incredibly confused but it turns out there were SUPPOSED to be to make the story work out in the end. I don't know it just felt like it could have used some more polishing.
