Definitely is a book geared toward a white Western (American) audience & Hughes missed opportunities to dig deeply into the words of African American influential figures. The conclusion was also lacking (essentially summed up the themes of the text by saying we need to build relationships and resist stereotypes, which is true, but very anticlimactic after a book with some strong points). Nevertheless, a really wonderful starting point to begin examining how Christian values shaped our nation and pervade today (in a more secularized form) — it helps us see how white Americans exist within the myths that formed our nation, how we got there in the first place, and what keeps us there at all.

Pretty interesting and succinct. I actually wish it had been longer and represented more viewpoints. I was especially fascinated with his description of the nation becoming Christianized and Christianity becoming state policy.
