I spent the last third of this book tearing up and calming down and tearing up and calming down and then just tearing up until the last page which did make me just cry. Incredible prose, incredible characters, incredible emotion. Themes of motherhood, racial and class boundaries and what it takes to maintain them without ever actually putting a physical gate up, of judgement and hatred masquerading as love, as regret and hope, of art and love; Ng just does not stop with the punches. My god. If this has been on your list, you have to read it today. YESTERDAY!!

I enjoyed the themes of motherhood/class/race that plainly interacted in all the characters lives, whether they were aware or not. Felt like the fire didn’t tie into the story as much as I would have thought.

What a great novel, that’s so multi-layered and rich with backstories for each of the main characters and which helps you understand why they ended up the way they did and what lead them to those decisions. It’s a story led by strong women characters who you might not always agree with their choices, but you understand why they made them.

i hate this book, i read it for book club and it was such a slow and bothersome read. the characters are introduced as stereotypes which was already annoying but i thought maybe that the author was trying to make a point about how the town is obsessed with the law and following rules, NO

ALL THE CHARACTERS ARE JUST ANNOYING TROPES THAT DONT GET BETTER!!

the author tries to write character development but half of the characters (trip, izzy, moody, etc) don’t really matter in the book and are tied to important characters like mia or mrs richardson but they don’t change or are only used to progress others.

i didn’t enjoy the personalities of the characters or the plot of the book, it was very bland even when the baby trial was happening. the best part of the book was mia’s childhood, but other than that i found it somewhat boring to read.
