I have very mixed feelings about this.... I FUCKING hated the part where they were living in France T.T I  was bored by the court politics and all that, and then by the end of the book it just didn't matter at all?? Like okay T.T The shit that happened while Jamie and Claire were there?? Craziness!! Some of the more traumatizing parts of that definitely felt excessive and urg just horrible. I was very uncomfortable reading those parts, though I suppose that was the intention as apparently Diana was going for a more morally gray route this book. Still some craziness. Once again FUCK JACK RANDALL!!! EW. Ew. I wish Diana would just kill him off already. I told myself that I wasn't going to continue this series after this book because of how much I disliked the France part, but damn the last 200 pages were actually kinda fire again T.T Like I speed through them because I wanted to know what happened so badly. I also really enjoyed Brianna and Roger's storyline, though aren't they related in a way? Like his Dad is her father's uncle? I don't have the brainpower for the mental dynamics of what that makes them but yikes!! So here we go again I suppose.... the next book is on hold from the library. Hopefully this one doesn't take me two months to read....

The middle was entirely too long but the first 10% and last 20% made up for all of it

These truly are bonkers, bonkers books, and thick bonkers books at that, spending hundreds of pages on things that ultimately have no real consequence just to have an excuse to put in a few rapes here and there and call it a plot. Really, the main rules of this series seem to be "Jack Randall can appear anywhere at any time for any reason and do anything he wants" and "When in doubt, insert a rape." I really have trouble with the latter. No matter how much I enjoy traipsing around the eighteenth century with a semi-modern narrator, I really can't reconcile myself to the author's approach to rape and sexual assault, and how it undercuts so much of the main relationships that drive this series. It really dampens my enjoyment of the series, knowing how much sexual violence has become a part of the characters themselves and yet only seems to be brought up when it can be used for the plot.

Didn't enjoy this as much as its predecessor, perhaps because I finally realized what I'm reading is a soap opera in a kilt. Which isn't a bad thing if that's what you want to spend 900 pages on! But I've overdosed for now.

A fabulous follow up. I’ve read this one many many times before, but this particular edition narrated by Kristin Atherton is just spectacular. She manages the complex accents flawlessly (and this is a tricky one as it features American and French alongside English and Scottish) and the pacing is just excellent.

I had a great time revisiting this one, and I can’t wait for the next one to be released in September!

Esta saga ha ganado un gran lugar en mi corazón. Jaime y Claire son maravillosos y estoy deseando saber más de Brienne y Roger.
