the first time i read this book, it was a required reading for my 12th grade english class. reading it again 7 years later, it doesn’t make it any less sad or heartbreaking.

there’s just something about the writing that makes you so incredibly attached to these characters, only to have your heart ripped out when they’re in pain or suffering.

every time i read the line “for you, a thousand times over” i had tears in my eyes.

I had been meaning to get around to reading this book for a long time. I think I was always held back because I thought it would be a long slog of a book passing over decades of time and didn't know if I had the patience for it. Fortunately, I was wrong. This book moves and is a quick read. It covers a lot of time but you don't notice it and it never seems to dwell on anything for too long.

The friendships and characters really are the book's strong points. I loved all the characters, they felt REAL. I also don't often get sad with books that are "supposed to be sad" or "make you cry," but man, this one hits home and really makes you, well, SAD. The story took turns I never saw coming and at one point I almost cried. I haven't cried since reading "Where the Red Fern Grows" in elementary school...so that's saying something. Anyways, read this, don't wait...it's beautiful.

This book was so heartbreaking to read. I cried multiple times while listeneing to it at work. I said "no" out loud at one part when i knew what was coming next. I absolutely loved it and it was written so well. The parallels drawn by the author between characters were amazing.

Quite a powerful story. Heartbreaking at times with such small but important moments of triumph mixed in to keep it from being too depressing. The story is very real and flows through Amir's life beautifully without time feeling jerky or leaving you feeling you are only getting part of the story. Hassan has to be one of the most tragic characters I've ever encountered in literature. He is so noble and loyal despite being treated like a second class citizen, and although he changes after he is raped, it is Amir who cannot recover from the incident and ultimately it is Amir's betrayal that hurts the most.

Amir finally finds peace while being beaten to death and is saved by Hassan's son in a gripping scene foreshadowed from early in the novel. It was hard seeing Sohrab treated so poorly, especially considering that it is at the hands of the man who abused his father. Amir redeems himself in a way by rescuing him, but then slips up again and sets the scene for Sohrab's attempted suicide. My heart nearly came to a stop when I realized what Amir would find in the bathroom that night. A powerful scene and one that set up the rest of the novel well. Sohrab's silence put a damper on the happy ending Amir and the reader hoped for, but then the final scene where Amir buys a kite and successfully cuts the string of an aggressive adversary making Sohrab's lips turn up in a half smile left the novel on an uptick and with hope that life will be better.

Pretty good - but the only thing I truly remember is a graphic rape scene. Definitely stuck with me more than anything else.
