I have many feelings about this book so lets start by the first one of them: the confusing pacing; the pacing of this book was so weird to me, i’ve never felt like i’ve read so much in so little, it feels like the pages were full, 10 pages read like 100, and yet in the majority of those pages nothing was happening.

While i do think the concept of the fallen Elantrians and the elantrian magic are so interesting, it just felt like i was reading a snippet of Percy Jackson and trope rebuilding Camp Half Blood (which isn’t bad per say, its just juvenile). Raoden would talk about the aons being so super difficult, but without fail he would have somewhat mastered a new aon never talked about in the next page. All challenges in Elantris were never really challenges EVER, because within 5 pages of motivational speeches and good willing they’d be conquered. “Men are attacking”, don’t worry! They are savages who can be bribed by little corn and take down my main enemy who has been pestering me for months on the way here; “the streets are dirty”, the newcomer just happened to be a cleaner; Raoden would miraculously remember plots that were never mentioned (looking at you, old elantrian in the lake).

Sarene’s plot had hopes, but it ultimately felt like that Pride and Prejudice review saying that the movie is just “a bunch of people visiting each other’s houses”. So many plans discussed over dinner, so many encounters done in balls that amounted to nothing. What was the point in all the talking? All their planning never amounted to anything, a bunch of coincidences led to their success and Elantris’ discussion never related to fate.

Hrathen…. I’d rather not discuss it, just so much wasted potential in him, his doubts in his faith could be explored so much better. It wansn’t bad by any means, but it wasnt great either.

Maybe that’s the main gripe i have with this book, while the characters are good, the world building is interesting, the main plot is also interesting, it ends up lackluster when you look at it as a whole. It’s good, but never great, and i don’t really think a 600 page book i paid quite a lot for can really afford to be just good. How are you writing so much and still feel like you left out SO MUCH. Learning this was a debut novel makes a lot of sense after completing it, because it reads like that.

PS. lowkey it felt like raoden was a bit of a self insert, because what do you mean he’s oh so perfect to the point where he’s solving unsolved mysteries by himself, mastering magic he was never exposed to in a month, getting the girl, and also managing to dissolve a decade (and more) worth of Elantris prejudice and hesitation from his citizens via a “he’s still the Raoden you all loved” speech…

Very enjoyable story. Can’t wait to see where he goes with the rest of his books since many say this was rough. But still a very good book.

Characters: ⭐⭐
I struggled with one of the POV characters—I just didn’t like them. Another felt quite boring to me, and while I did warm to the third, it took an awfully long time.

World-building & Setting: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The world-building was impressive—well thought-out and very engaging!

Plot: ⭐⭐
Not terrible, but unbearably slow. I later found out there were scenes that had been cut, and honestly, I wish they’d stayed. They would’ve added much-needed explanations, and I probably would have liked one of the characters sooner. Plus, those scenes were action-packed and funny. It’s such a shame they were removed.

Pacing: ⭐
Painfully slow. A large chunk of the book felt like watching the characters do nothing at all.

Writing Style: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The writing itself is brilliant. I’m sure the author has other, much stronger books out there.

Community, Expectations & Feelings 💚: ⭐
I came into this with such high expectations—so many people had recommended it to me. Perhaps that played a role in my disappointment, but either way, it just didn’t resonate with me.
